Advice for Work Experience Organisers
For schools who run their own work experience placements
It is sometimes said that you can tell what a school is like within the first five minutes of being there. It is quite easy to distinguish a friendly atmosphere - where everyone is working together, from a hostile one, where everyone, including the children, are under stress. For example:
- Does all that noise coming from the school hall indicate chaos and loss of discipline or a great learning experience?
- Does the silence in the staff room indicate tension between the staff, or serenity due to the staff being totally at ease with one another.
- Do all the bright pictures on the wall illustrate the children's good work or the head teacher's quick cover-up of dilapidated-and crumbling walls?
